Night Drive

My life feels like a night drive

At best

I can only see the near future

The road feels unfamiliar

My soundtrack is usually comforting

but often I turn it off

favoring instead

the sound of the road

the wind

The engine becomes my companion

Something I can rely on

mostly

Every shift of gears

a short but meaningful conversation

The stops are only temporary

Eventually I always feel

like it's time

for somewhere new

I roll down the windows

to smell the country

the city

or just to vent

I feel distant from everything

like the stars above me

or the hills ahead of me

It's rare these days that I give out rides

At least now I wear my seatbelt
